U.S. Virgin Islands Smartphone App Now Available

Free application provides new tool to enhance visitors’ experience on St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas

U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS, August 22, 2011 – The USVI Department of Tourism’s official, free smartphone app is now available to travelers who want to explore the many leisure experiences that St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas have to offer.

The app is the newest way for travelers to learn about the USVI. Users will be able to bookmark points of interests and plan their trips ahead of time, accessing up-to-date information about activities and attractions in the islands. Once the app is downloaded, users can access USVI information anytime and anywhere, making it easier to plan their vacations. Once on vacation, the user will have one-touch access to local business phone numbers and can locate businesses on a real-time map, all in the palm of their hands.

Designed for ease-of-use by travelers on the go, many of the app’s features do not require an active network connection. Features that do not require network access include:

  • Business listings (Includes activity operators, restaurants, shops, hotels, services)
  • Adding/removing bookmarks
  • Travel Information (travel tips, island-hopping guide, taxi rates, etc.)
  • Events listing
  • Promotions listing
  • Trivia game

With an active network connection, app users can seamlessly peruse the USVI photo and video galleries, view footage throughout the islands via webcams and access recipes and site reviews, to name a few. The app’s special features may vary depending on the user’s type of smartphone, but all platforms will allow users to share favorite places by email or on Facebook, creating interactive experiences between visitors and their friends and family back home. Users of the new app are encouraged to check with their mobile provider for network coverage and terms and conditions for using their device while in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

“With one out of every two Americans estimated to own a smartphone by the end of the year, travelers are increasingly using apps to find real-time travel information on the go,” said Tourism Commissioner Beverly Nicholson-Doty. “We are excited to take advantage of this technology that will make planning and enjoying a USVI vacation even more convenient and fun,” she added.

The app is free and can be downloaded at the App Store to iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch devices (with iOS version 3.1 or higher), Android smartphones (with Android OS version 1.6 or higher) and Blackberry smartphones (Blackberry OS version 5.0 or higher). An enhanced Blackberry version will be available later this month.
