U.S. Virgin Islands Native Named ‘Chef of the Year’ During Caribbean Week

~Chef Digby Stridiron recognized for USVI-inspired dish during New York competition~

U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS (June 9, 2014) — On Friday, June 6, St. Croix native Chef Digby Stridiron was recognized as Chef of the Year during the Rum & Rhythm live cook-off event, sponsored by the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO). Chef Digby stood out among 30 other Caribbean competitors with his USVI-inspired red grout dish.  The Rum & Rhythm competition was just one of many ways the Territory was prominently featured during CTO’s annual New York City Caribbean Week, June 1-7, 2014.

 “We are so proud of Chef Digby Stridiron for winning the Rum & Rhythm cook-off.” said Commissioner Beverly Nicholson-Doty. “Chef did an excellent job interpreting the USVI’s personality through his culinary talents.  This win continues to demonstrate why our Territory is one of the top culinary destinations.”

Chef Digby also represented the U.S. Virgin Islands cuisine with cooking demonstrations on June 4 and 5 where he made other traditional USVI dishes in front of an engaged New York-based consumer audience. Chef has a reputation of creating elegant events for clients including Vivica Fox, R&B Singer Mario, and NFL star Kerry Rhodes, as well as working on the road for recording artists Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj.

The cook-off was one of the many ways the USVI participated in Caribbean Week. The DOT also sponsored a diverse range of events, while the USVI delegation engaged with travel trade, media, brides-to-be and New York City gourmands.
