St. Croix Episode of ‘Bizarre Foods America’ With Andrew Zimmern Scheduled to Air August 19 on Travel Channel

U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS (August 13, 2013)— The U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) Department of Tourism is pleased to announce an all-new, hour-long episode of the hit Travel Channel series “Bizarre Foods America” focusing on St. Croix will air nationally on Monday, August 19, at 9 p.m. The episode, titled “St. Croix, USVI: Bull’s Feet in Paradise” positions St. Croix, and the USVI, as one of the world’s premier cultural and culinary escapes.

The DOT worked closely with the show’s production team from Tremendous! Entertainment to shoot on-location for 12 days during January 2013. This included working with story researchers to profile USVI cuisine, culture and personalities. Tremendous! Entertainment’s production team spent more than $150,000 on the island, employed seven local crew members, and profiled Crucians in the episode. The show is estimated to reach more than 3,221,920 potential travelers as it re-airs multiple times on Travel Channel, generating an estimated total media value of $1,458,560.

“The impact of a Travel Channel series like Bizarre Foods filming in St. Croix is far reaching, particularly since the show’s episode will air more than once, engaging more than a million viewers in our unique Crucian culture,” said Commissioner Nicholson-Doty. “The DOT thanks all those who assisted the production while in the Territory and we look forward to more opportunities like this one to showcase the diverse experiences found in St. Croix and all the islands of the U.S. Virgin Islands.”

In the episode, host Andrew Zimmern discovers a melting pot full of surprises when he visits St. Croix in the USVI. According to the episode’s synopsis provided by the Travel Channel, “The hard working people in this tropical paradise blend resourcefulness and diverse cultural backgrounds to create a flavor that’s all their own. From herding a special breed of island cattle to chasing down land crabs, to fishing for a shelled fish that can’t be caught with a hook, Zimmern gets a true taste of Crucian culture. Among the menu items: bull foot soup, shellfish liver, conch roti and breadfruit tostones.”

The DOT will share online clips of the episode this week on the USVI on Twitter (@USVITOURISM) and on Facebook in advance of the on-air premiere.
