USVI News Reporter to work at New York public relations firm this summer;
fall 2014 intern search underway
U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS (June 5, 2014) – The Department of Tourism (DOT) is pleased to announce that Virgin Islander Sheniqua Robinson has joined the Department of Tourism’s New York-based public relations agency of record, Development Counsellors International (DCI), as its new full time summer intern. Robinson will support DCI’s account team on USVI public relations and marketing initiatives, including the DOT’s activities during New York City Caribbean Week June 1-7. The internship is designed to help Robinson develop new skills and gain valuable hands-on experiences to pursue a career in tourism marketing.
Born and raised on St. Croix, Robinson is well-known among locals as a news reporter for News TV 2 and as Miss Virgin Islands 2010-2011. She is also familiar to the Department of Tourism having worked as a greeter, sharing USVI history and culture with visitors to the Territory.
“I am no stranger to representing the USVI,” said Sheniqua Robinson. “I have a deep love and passion for the Virgin Islands. I’m excited that I can now share it through another channel – marketing and public relations.”
Her role as a news reporter will help Robinson uncover new destination story ideas and package them to pique editorial interest in the destination. She will also be able to draw upon her studies as a recent graduate of the University of the Virgin Islands, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Communications.
“The Department of Tourism is committed to providing educational experiences to our island youth,” says Commissioner of Tourism, Ms. Beverly Nicholson-Doty. “Each term we receive interest from many outstanding candidates but it was Sheniqua’s passion for the Virgin Islands, past experiences in representing our destination, and her communications background that made her stand out.”
Fall 2014 Internship Opportunity
The DOT is now accepting cover letters and resumes from candidates interested in applying for the New-York based fall 2014 intern position. Daily tasks will include, but will not be limited to, media pitching, event planning, drafting and editing press materials, conducting research and working with on-island tourism partners.
In order to apply, candidates must be residents of the USVI who are recent graduates, or in their final year of study, at an accredited undergraduate or graduate university program with a concentration in marketing, mass communications or public relations.
