ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands – November 12, 2008 – The U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism is pleased to announce the appointment of Chantal R. Figueroa to Deputy Commissioner of Tourism. In her new position, Mrs. Figueroa will assume expanded roles within the Department as well as the local community to advance the Department’s efforts to strengthen and grow the Territory’s tourism industry.
In her new role as Deputy Commissioner, Mrs. Figueroa will have enhanced regional and national responsibilities including direct involvement with the Tourism Industry of America (TIA), Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) and the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA). Beyond these activities, Mrs. Figueroa will expand her community involvement on behalf of the Department while maintaining current marketing responsibilities. She will also work with the deJongh administration and local businesses to strengthen the Territory’s overall tourism product.
Figueroa has a proven track record of strong leadership, which is evident in her previous work within the Department of Tourism. She has played a vital role in the development and success of the Territory’s marketing efforts. Additionally, she has made significant contributions to the establishment of a rebranding strategy for St. Croix. During her tenure as Director of Marketing for the Department of Tourism, she served as a spokesperson for the destination, notably as a key testifier at legislative hearings on marketing issues and as a speaker during media/sales blitzes in key consumer markets including Washington, D.C. and Miami. Her involvement in these initiatives throughout her term has contributed significantly to the growth of the Territory’s tourism business.
“Throughout her tenure with the DOT, Chantal has consistently delivered superior marketing results and I’m confident she’ll do the same in her expanded role as Deputy Commissioner of Tourism,” noted Tourism Commissioner Beverly Nicholson-Doty. “I am pleased that she has agreed to apply her expertise to grow the Department’s ongoing efforts to promote the U.S. Virgin Islands brand to the local and global community.”

Governor John P. deJongh, Jr. added to the Department’s announcement by noting that this promotion “is a firm display of our commitment to build a foundation for the long term success of the Department of Tourism.”
As a Virgin Islands native, Mrs. Figueroa maintains a deep-rooted history in the Territory, having served the Department of Tourism for more than eight years. She first joined as the Director of Meeting & Conventions and soon worked her way up to Assistant Director of Marketing, followed by Director of Marketing, where she spearheaded the Department’s marketing initiatives including public relations, advertising, film promotion and online marketing. Figueroa’s past work experience includes positions in sales and marketing at hotels in the Virgin Islands. She holds a Master of Science degree in Travel & Tourism Management from New York University. Figueroa currently resides in St. Thomas with her husband and three children.
